Clinical depression is a condition caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that make a person constantly feel aloof, negative, sad, and unmotivated. Depression can last for weeks, months, or even years. It can result from stress, certain situations, or triggered by nothing at all. Depression can affect people of any age, including teens and young children.

Young people frequently suffer from depressive disorders, which leaves parents with questions such as: what causes it, and what treatments are available? The good news is that depression is treatable and some of the most effective depression treatments come in the form of Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques.

In the past, it was thought that younger people could not experience depression, but in reality, depression affects people of all ages. Often, depression in children and teens is triggered by events such as a relationship breakup, illness, a loss in the family, changing schools, or abuse. In some people, depression has no external cause. Depression often runs in families, meaning mothers and fathers with depression are more likely to have offspring who also suffer from depression.

There are many different forms of depression. Most children with depression have a type of major depression. This form obstructs a person’s ability to enjoy life and engage in normal activities. Some children and teens may also suffer from a milder type of depression called Dysthymic Disorder, which is a long-term type of depression with less severe symptoms than major depression. A rarer but still common type of depression is manic-depression (bipolar disorder), which is characterized by mood shifts from extreme happiness to extreme sadness.

Depression can be a problem for young people because their symptoms vary slightly from the ones adults frequently display, making it more challenging to diagnose and treat. Often, children and teens with depression will not feel sad or “depressed” as one would find in adults. Constant irritability is typically one of the biggest signs of depression in children and teens. Signs of depression may not be obvious, but may include difficulty concentrating and difficulty sleeping, exhaustion, and decreased interest in activities.

Children with depression may do poorly in school, have problems making friends, or have disciplinary problems. The effects are also pronounced for teens, who may abuse alcohol and drugs to escape their depression. Depressive disorder is no one’s fault, but those with depression do have the power to get treatment and find out how to handle their depression.

Depression treatments can range from counseling and therapy, to the use of antidepressant drugs. Group psychotherapy can be helpful for teenagers and children by providing a safe place to share their experience with others. Online services such as forums for depressed teens can also provide a source of information for teen depression and serve as a therapy group for the depressed.

Behavioral counseling can help teach people how to manage their depression. Counselors can help parents understand what causes a child’s depression. Family counseling helps educate parents on why their child has depression and what they can do to help.

In some cases, antidepressant medications are prescribed. This is only done under the supervision of a physician who will monitor the child’s health and mental state. Even though people with severe depression may have a need for antidepressants, these drugs can have undesirable side effects, especially in young people, who are still developing. This is why counseling, understanding and support from parents and professional therapists, and the use of techniques that help young people learn how to cope with their depression by themselves are considered better for helping children with depression.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) practices can be used to relieve anxiety, tension, and depression. They help people form safe and constructive coping mechanisms for reducing depression. It works for all people because it is non-invasive, does not require the use of any drugs, and is an effective form of self-therapy.

One NLP technique used to alleviate depression is the NLP Flash. This technique reprograms your unconscious mind to use the feelings that create stress and depression as triggers for thoughts that eliminate depression instead. It is a technique that even young people can learn to use to help them reduce their depression.

People with depression need not suffer. Therapeutic techniques can help depressed people of all ages find relief. NLP techniques are excellent for helping children and their families cope with stress and depression. These techniques can reduce or even eliminate depression in people of all ages.

You’re wondering what cause anxiety attacks, maybe because you’re wondering if you’ve had one. Or you may want to know the causes so that you can learn how to cure your disorder. Well, what I’m going to share with you are the causes of anxiety attacks.

That way, you will know if you’ve got an anxiety disorder and you will know how to stop it.

The causes of an anxiety attack are:

1. Hyperventilation syndrome. This syndrome is triggered when you breathe through your mouth. When you breathe out of your mouth for too long, you will increase your heart rate. This will then trigger lightheadedness and eventually it will trigger an anxiety attack.

2. Heredity. You could possibly have an anxiety disorder if one of your family members have a history of anxiety attacks or panic attacks.

3. Short term causes. An anxiety attack could be triggered when something dramatic happens in your life, such as when someone close to you dies. If you notice that you’re having emotional problems, be sure to limit your caffeine intake. If you consume too much caffeine, you could trigger an anxiety attack.

4. Phobias. Another cause of an anxiety attack is caused by things you’re afraid of. If you’re scared of speaking in front of a lot of people, you could possibly have an anxiety attack.

5. Environment. If the atmosphere is hot and humid, you could have an anxiety attack. Also, being around too many people for an extended period of time causes some people to have an anxiety attack.

I’ve just outlined what cause anxiety attacks. If you have anxiety attacks, you need to do something about it now. Waiting for too long could be fatal.

Stress- A Part of Daily Life

Existence is a gradually becoming a very complicated process. In the olden days, life was much simpler. People were bothered with the day to day proceedings. They did not have much complicated life styles. Their unhappiness was much more basic. Maybe it stemmed from lack of money or resources, or the illness of relatives etc. The word ‘stress’ was virtually unknown at that time. These days, every few sentence includes the word stress in it. Most people do not quite realize what exactly it is.

The word ‘stress’ is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “a state of affair involving demand on physical or mental energy”. A situation or circumstance (not always adverse), which can disturb the normal physical and mental health of an individual. In medical terms ‘stress’ is defined as an alteration of the body’s homeostasis. This demand on mind-body occurs when it tries to cope with incessant changes in life.

A ‘stress’ condition seems ‘relative’ in nature. Extreme stress conditions, psychologists say, are detrimental to human health but in moderation stress is normal and, in many cases, proves useful. Stress, nonetheless, is synonymous with negative conditions.

“Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.”

—Thomas Jefferson

The events that provoke stress are called stressors, and they cover a whole assortment of situations – everything from absolute physical danger to making a class presentation.

The human body responds to stressors by activating the nervous system and specific hormones. The hypothalamus signals the adrenal glands to produce more of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol and release them into the bloodstream. These hormones speed up heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and metabolism. Blood vessels open wider to let more blood flow to large muscle groups, putting our muscles on alert. Pupils dilate to improve vision. The liver releases some of its stored glucose to increase the body’s energy. And sweat is produced to cool the body. All of these physical changes prepare a person to react quickly and effectively to handle the pressure of the moment.

This natural reaction is known as the stress response. Stress in certain circumstances may be experienced positively. Eustress, for example, can be an adaptive response prompting the activation of internal resources to meet challenges and achieve goals. But the stress response can also cause problems when it overreacts or fails to turn off and reset itself properly.

Good Stress and Bad Stress

The stress response (also called the fight or flight response) is critical during emergency situations, such as when a driver has to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident. It can also be activated in a milder form at a time when the pressure’s on but there’s no actual danger – like stepping up to take the foul shot that could win the game, getting ready to go to a big dance, or sitting down for a final exam. A little of this stress can help keep you on your toes, ready to rise to a challenge. And the nervous system quickly returns to its normal state, standing by to respond again when needed.

But stress doesn’t always happen in response to things that are immediate or that are over quickly. Ongoing or long-term events, like coping with a divorce or moving to a new neighborhood or school, can cause stress, too. Long-term stressful situations can produce a lasting, low-level stress that’s hard on people. The nervous system senses continued pressure and may remain slightly activated and continue to pump out extra stress hormones over an extended period. This can wear out the body’s reserves, leave a person feeling depleted or overwhelmed, weaken the body’s immune system, and cause other problems.

Although just enough stress can be a good thing, stress overload is a different story – too much stress isn’t good for anyone. For example, feeling a little stress about a test that’s coming up can motivate you to study hard. But stressing out too much over the test can make it hard to concentrate on the material you need to learn.

Pressures that are too intense or last too long, or troubles that are shouldered alone, can cause people to feel stress overload. Here are some of the things that can overwhelm the body’s ability to cope if they continue for a long time:

being bullied or exposed to violence or injury
relationship stress, family conflicts, or the heavy emotions that can accompany a broken heart or the death of a loved one
ongoing problems with schoolwork related to a learning disability or other problems, such as ADHD (usually once the problem is recognized and the person is given the right learning support the stress disappears)
Overcrowded schedules, not having enough time to rest and relax, and always being on the go.
Problems in the work place, rivalry with colleagues.

Some stressful situations can be extreme and may require special attention and care. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a very strong stress reaction that can develop in people who have lived through an extremely traumatic event, such as a serious car accident, a natural disaster like an earthquake, or an assault like rape.

Some people have anxiety problems that can cause them to overreact to stress, making even small difficulties seem like crises. If a person frequently feels tense, upset, worried, or stressed, it may be a sign of anxiety. Anxiety problems usually need attention, and many people turn to professional counselors for help in overcoming them.

People who are experiencing stress overload may notice some of the following signs:

anxiety or panic attacks
a feeling of being constantly pressured, hassled, and hurried
irritability and moodiness
physical symptoms, such as stomach problems, headaches, or even chest pain
allergic reactions, such as eczema or asthma
problems sleeping
drinking too much, smoking, overeating, or doing drugs
sadness or depression

Experiences of stress differ from person to person. Some people become angry and act out their stress or take it out on others. Some people internalize it and develop eating disorders or substance abuse problems. And some people who have a chronic illness like blood pressure, blood sugar, arthritis etc may find that the symptoms of their illness flare up under an overload of stress.

Stress-management skills work best when they’re used regularly, not just when the pressure’s on. Knowing how to “de-stress” and doing it when things are relatively calm can help one get through challenging circumstances that may arise. Here are some things that can help keep stress under control.

Taking a stand against over scheduling: If one is feeling stressed, one must consider cutting out an activity or two, opting for just the ones which are most important.
Being realistic. It is not necessary to be perfect. No one is. And expecting others to be perfect can add to one’s stress level, too. It also puts a lot of pressure on them. If one needs help on something, one should ask for it.
Getting a good night’s sleep. Getting enough sleep helps keep one’s body and mind in great shape, making one better equipped to deal with any negative stressors. Because the biological “sleep clock” shifts during adolescence, many teens prefer staying up a little later at night and sleeping a little later in the morning. But if one stays up late and still needs to get up early, one may not get all the hours of sleep one needs.
Learn to relax .The body’s natural antidote to stress is called the relaxation response. It’s your body’s opposite of stress, and it creates a sense of well-being and calm. The chemical benefits of the relaxation response can be activated simply by relaxing. You can help trigger the relaxation response by learning simple breathing exercises and then using them when you’re caught up in stressful situations. And ensure you stay relaxed by building time into your schedule for activities that are calming and pleasurable: reading a good book or making time for a hobby, spending time with your pet, or just taking a relaxing bath.
Treat your body well. Experts agree that getting regular exercise helps people manage stress. (Excessive or compulsive exercise can contribute to stress, though, so as in all things, use moderation.) And eat well to help your body get the right fuel to function at its best. It’s easy when you’re stressed out to eat on the run or eat junk food or fast food. But under stressful conditions, the body needs its vitamins and minerals more than ever. Some people may turn to substance abuse as a way to ease tension. Although alcohol or drugs may seem to lift the stress temporarily, relying on them to cope with stress actually promotes more stress because it wears down the body’s ability to bounce back.
Watch what you’re thinking. Your outlook, attitude, and thoughts influence the way you see things. Is your cup half full or half empty? A healthy dose of optimism can help you make the best of stressful circumstances. Even if you’re out of practice, or tend to be a bit of a pessimist, everyone can learn to think more optimistically and reap the benefits.
Solve the little problems. Learning to solve everyday problems can give you a sense of control. But avoiding them can leave you feeling like you have little control and that just adds to stress. Develop skills to calmly look at a problem, figure out options, and take some action toward a solution. Feeling capable of solving little problems builds the inner confidence to move on to life’s bigger ones – and it can serve you well in times of stress.

Some people are very resilient under stressful situations. They’re cool under pressure and able to handle problems as they come up. They are very well balanced and capable.

Depression is an illness that involves body, mind and thoughts. It is not a physical weakness that will vanish within days but it’s the state that interferes with the daily chores of life resulting in poor performance or output. It gives rise to a negative feeling for each and every thing. It may also be defined as allergy, which triggers an unhappy reaction. It may be due to emotional or mental stress and strain or due to high intake of antibiotics. Sometimes anxiety also results in depression. It also arises out of the monotony and drudgery of a daily routine without any meaningful variation in urban life. The major risk in extreme cases of depression is suicide.

Threats of redundancy, job outsourcing, pay freezes and soaring unemployment affect every one of us so it’s no wonder that many of us are experiencing work related stress. According to the labour Force Survey, in 2007/08 an estimated 442 000 individuals in Britain, who worked in the last year, believed that they were experiencing work related stress at a level that was making them ill. Couple this with increasing employment and fewer job vacancies leads to individuals feeling even more pressured to remain in the very role that is causing their stress.

Stress not only leads to high level absenteeism but affects productivity levels at work as concentration is impaired and anxiety may kick in as we struggle to cope with our ever demanding duties. It is not surprising then to learn that British workers work the longest hours in Europe and many organisations still have not introduced family-friendly working (Tuc.org.uk). So what can be done when we feel stressed? First of all it’s advisable to be aware of what stress is. Stress is the emotional and physical strain caused by our response to pressure from the outside world (ehealthMD: Definition of Stress). Stress not only impairs concentration but can cause irritability, tension, anxiety, headaches and fast heart beat. It can also weaken the immune system and lead to high blood pressure as a long term consequence. In other realms of our lives, stress can lead individuals to lose interest in every other aspect of life outside work and even depression. Many of us feel unable to inform our Managers of when we are stressed as we feel that we may not be taken seriously and that our complaints will adversely affect the way we are treated at work. Our competence also may be questioned and we may be seen as weak. In a work culture that wants fast delivery and increased work output within a short space of time, it’s unsurprising that we are experiencing burn out. With this in mind however, individuals must consider that they are not alone and that many of their colleagues and even friends may be experiencing stress even if they choose not to declare it to anyone. So if you are reading this article and often feel overwhelmed, irritable and unable to cope at work don’t keep it to yourself.

1: Face it head on
If you are given two pieces of work to deal with which are both priorities, when speaking to your manager, acknowledge that you are aware that both are priority tasks, however ask which, he/she would rather you do first. It may not work in all situations but it’s worth a try and puts the ball in their court!

2: Speak to friends and family
You have had a hard day at work and the last thing you want to do is get work problems off your chest but it can be cathartic to do so. As you unburden yourself by speaking to your friends they can help comfort, support and even advise you. If however, you can’t speak to anyone; get it down in writing how you feel.

3: Duty of Care
Find out if your employer has a duty of care for its staff as some Councils in the U.K do and if so they should take into consideration the welfare of their staff. Other employers offer counselling services for staff members especially when working in frontline services. If you would like to work in a way that suits your work and home life better then consider flexible working and put it as a proposition to your Manager who should consider your proposal before making a decision. So find out what support is available to you at work

4: Take time out
You’re at work, with a demanding workload and deadlines popping up every time you look around. If you feel as though you are stressed and overwhelmed take five minutes away from the source of stress. You may have to O.K it with your manager first but composing yourself and clearing your head even if only for a few minutes will help give you clarity, compose yourself and refresh your mind. Practice deep breathing if you feel dizzy and are have breathing difficulties.

5: Take advantage of stress therapies at work
Some employers arrange for Indian Head Massages and Colour Therapy to be carried out at work. Others offer a discount rate gym pass thus encouraging you to use the gym and help reduce your stress levels. If stress leads to you feeling tension in your body and your workplace offer massages, it may be beneficial to take this up as a good masseur can work on the tense knots in your body and leave you feeling rejuvenated and calm.

6: Seek external help
Try Yoga, Reiki, Life Coaching, Pilates and Tai Chi to aid you in reducing stress.

7: Organise and prioritise
Organise your tasks into those that should be done daily, weekly, monthly or long term. If new unexpected tasks pop up throughout the day assign them a relevant category before deciding that it automatically needs to be done now. If you are not doing so already, use Microsoft Scheduler or some other form of diary to keep work tasks up to date and use it to flag up tasks that should be carried out on specific days. Also, a good tip is to under promise and over deliver!

8: Acknowledge clients
You have a heavy caseload, the phones are going mad and several priorities to do when an email arrives from an important client and they are expecting you to do a task. Even if it is brief, acknowledge their email with a friendly greeting and let them either know when you can get the task done or state that you will look into the matter and get back to them within a certain number of days. That way they feel that they haven’t been ignored and will leave you to get on with the task until the prescribed time in which you said you would update them or get it done.

9: Delegation
If faced with routine tasks that take up too much of your time, see if you can delegate some of them to a colleague – that way you can focus on the more important tasks.

10: Analyse your situation
You have several tasks to do at once, an unsupportive Manager who gives you no significant help or support, who is demanding and specifies unreachable deadlines and you feel as though you cannot cope. Despite taking the matter further, you feel as though you are not being listened to and so the stress spirals further. Are you working long hours, with no lunch break and little time for family and friends? Does this fit in with your lifestyle and goals? Unless it’s a job role you really enjoy, does your workplace fit with your lifestyle? Holistically, are you achieving the right balance? If the job you once loved is now the job you dread and leaves you crunching your stomach every time you wake up in the morning, you really need to assess if you are where you want to be.

Given all of the above, do you find that:

1: You dread getting up from bed in the morning when contemplating going to work?
2: Talk endlessly to friends and family about work problems with still no resolution in sight?
3: Due to a great salary, perks and status feel powerless to leave your job for fear of losing these things but want to explore other options that would enable you a better work/life balance?
4: You feel angry, irritated and moody every time you think of work
5: Throw ‘sickies’
6: Instinctively, although you like the work, feel that the workplace and demands placed on you are not right and are wholly unreasonable
7: You often feel stressed, tensed, anxious, dizzy, and make simple yet grave mistakes through poor concentration
8: You have an inability to sleep through always thinking about outstanding work tasks and deadlines
9: Your health is affected as a result of under or over eating to cope with stress
10: You fail to return friends and family calls, as well as make them
11: Cannot relax at home as you are still thinking about your day and the week’s workload to come
12: You are poorly managed by your boss who is increasing your stress further
13: You feel stressed because you do not fit in with the work culture and feel excluded if you do not join in with office politics or with the popular colleagues at work
14: Your relationship is affected by your stress at work and you cannot admit to your spouse how bad things are for fear of being seen as ‘weak’
15: Feel as though you have no one to turn to.

If you are affected by the above and this article touches a chord with you then please contact me on 0208 835 2792 / 07930 549 572 and we can discuss this further.

If you suffer from anxiety and panic attacks and visit a doctor or psychiatrist – you are almost always going to be given a prescription for medication. This is simply because doctors don’t have much time and believe it to be the fastest solution to your anxiety problem.

Most doctors have the best intentions but simply do not spend all their time in finding alternatives for these chemicals that may cause many unpleasant side effects.

Here you will find some very good reasons to treat your anxiety without medication – and the best natural alternative for doing exactly that.

Why should you try to get rid of anxiety without medication?

First of all, you must know that medication will not cure anxiety disorders! It can only keep them under control while, and if, you receive psychotherapy!

Second, anxiety medication can cause different problems – from mild to severe ones. The most common side effect is drowsiness. You really don’t need that while you are working, driving, or doing anything else. High-potency benzodiazepines have few side effects other than drowsiness. You can very easily get used to them and may need higher and higher doses to get the same effect. In short, they are very addictive.

Other possible side effects include:

Headaches, nausea
dizziness
unsteadiness
problems with coordination
difficulty thinking or remembering
increased saliva
muscle or joint pain
frequent urination
blurred vision
changes in sex drive or ability

Another reason to cope with anxiety without medication: The minute you stop taking them, anxiety will return full blown. Do you need any more reasons for managing your anxiety without medication?

#1 Alternative for treating anxiety without medication – Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is very useful in treating anxiety disorders. The cognitive part helps you change the thinking patterns that support your fears, and the behavioral part helps you change the way you react to anxiety-provoking situations.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy teaches you to understand and change your thinking patterns so you can react differently to the situations that cause you anxiety. Makes sense, right? And this is exactly how you should eliminate your anxiety without medication – and forever.

How does it work?

You are probably well aware that a panic attack is a ‘fight or flight’ response to a perceived threat. In short, a separate part of your brain becomes more active during a panic attack.

The problem, as you well know, is that once the panic attack begins and that heightened state of fear starts, it is very difficult to calm yourself down. In order to calm yourself you need the brains mental activity to change. Deep breathing, for instance, will not help you. All deep breathing does is try and restore calm to the body. Trying to mentally calm the body is like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted.

Just coping with this condition is not good enough. Cognitive Therapy will teach you how to free yourself from ever having another panic attack.
